NASI LEMAK
Nasi Lemak is the definitive Malay breakfast item for most Singaporeans , although a traditional Malay classic, is a choice breakfast option that is also a favourite for the Chinese and Indian communities in Singapore . Its name literally means "rice in cream" , the rice is cooked in coconut milk, making the rice slightly sweet and sticky and lightly flavoured with pandan leaves to give it a great fragrant aroma and this is the reason why the rice is slightly green in color.
There are two versions of Nasi Lemak in Singapore, the Malay and the Chinese version. The Malay (original) version has a straightforward offering of ikan bilis (fried crispy anchovies) and peanuts, fried fish, slices of cucumber and sometimes a hard boiled egg .Whereas the Chinese version have a whole bunch of things like deep fried drumstick, chicken franks, fish cake, fried egg, peanuts, curried vegetables and luncheon meat (Asian Spam) in it.
Like the chicken rice, the accompanying chilli condiment can make all the difference; sometimes the chilli and plain lemak rice is enough for a satisfying meal.
