KAYA TOAST
Kaya Toast is one of the most popular breakfast items for Chinese in Singapore and is actually slices of white loaf bread (square shape or round on one side) that are toasted on a charcoal grill with a layer of sweet coconut and egg jam , known as kaya in Singapore , spread between them . Some hawkers may add butter as well, which gives it an added taste but some hawker may add too much and make the kaya toast taste oily.
A good Kaya Toast is one where the spread of coconut egg jam is sweet, and there is small amount of butter. The surface of the kaya toast is slightly crispy. So when you bite into the kaya toast, you are able to experience the soft interior and the crispy exterior of the Kaya Toast plus the sweet taste of the coconut egg jam and butter.
Kaya Toast is usually served together with a cup of tea or black coffee and one or two half-boiled eggs. The half-boiled egg should be cracked and placed in a bowl or saucer, add soya sauce and pepper to taste and slurped it up.
