ECONOMICAL RICE
Economical Rice or Economy Rice is basically the Chinese version of the Indonesian Nasi Padang and is something that all Singaporeans eat. It is your typical working person's quick but hearty meal of white steamed rice with a variety of side dishes. Sometimes can be called Curry Rice or Chap Chye (Mixed Vegetables) .
The dishes available for Economical Rice vary from stall to stall, depending on the cook's capabilities and inclinations , normally, you will find a combination of some of the following: a few fried vegetable dishes (spinach, bean sprouts, cabbage, etc.), one toufu dish (fried or steamed), an egg dish (omelette, steamed egg), a few meat dishes (pork, chicken, fish, etc.). The dishes have been cooked and will be displayed in trays or plates for you to choose from. Feel free to ask what the dish is before ordering.
If you do not like plain white rice, and the dishes you have ordered do not have much gravy, you can ask the vendor to give you a spoonful or two of gravy from another dish. This could usually be a curry or soya sauce-based dish.
The Hainanese have created a slightly more expensive version of Economical Rice with pork chops, and a range of gravies that is specially cooked for this dish.
In the event that you are eating Economical Rice alone, the dishes will usually be pilled onto a plate with your rice at the bottom . if you are eating in a group and would like to share a few dishes, you can ask for these to be served separately. Prices for Economical Rice also vary depending on the location of the stall, but a typical serving of one meat and two vegetables for a single person would cost S$ 3 - 5.
